In this video I am focusing on combustible resources to not only ignite my fire, but to make it burn hot and long giving me time to add kindling/fuel.
When I go in the forest or just travel in general, I now usually keep dryer lent with me. This is a easy combustible element and takes a spark from a ferrocerium rod very easily as you will see in the video.
While I was walking in the forest I collected two additional explosive elements to make my fire burn hot and long which gives me time to add additional pieces of wood. This method is also good for times that are wet or when it is raining. These two additional elements are “old man’s beard” ( a natural growing tree moss in northern Canada) and tree sap/resin.
Once the dryer lent is lit, you can add the tree moss and it will burn quick and hot giving your fire a good start to grow. Additionally you can add the tree sap/resin that you collected and this is essentially like adding gasoline. The sap will ignite and burn hot and long and add additional fuel to your fire. This will give you plenty of time to make your fire grow and burn and help it to stay going.
In addition to the video, I have added photos of a tree with sap/resin and a picture of it scraped off and in my hand. Do not hesitate to ask me questions or to clarify something for you. The most important thing we can do is to get outside and practice.
