Finding direction without a compass
Finding direction without a compass
Method 1 Examine the trees (Video 1)
Often when trees have one side facing the prevailing winds from the North, there will be insufficient growth and sometimes, damage. Alternatively, on the south side of the tree, there may be little damage and a lot of healthy growth. This is because the south side of the tree has most of the sun and little prevailing winds. Please practice this method and look for it in nature.
Method 2 Stick and shadow (video 2)
In this method I place a stick in the ground to use the power of the sun. The stick will immediately cast a shadow. Please place a rock at the top of the shadow. Wait approximately 30 minutes or so and the shadow will noticeably move. As the sun moves across the sky, it affects the shadow. At the new location place another marker. Now if you draw a line between the two markers, you will have your east-west line. The original marker is facing west while the second marker is facing east. Now, if you go and stand between the two markers with your back to the stick, your face will be looking North while your backside will be facing south.
Method 3 The Moon
When you see a crescent moon in the sky, you can connect an imaginary line between the two horns and draw this to the horizon. This will give you your south direction on the compass. Please see the picture I provided.
Secondly, the moon more or less will rise in the east and set in the west. The moon will find itself more or less very close to due south at midnight.
